I think one reason he helped establish photography as art was that he did not only take pictures of people standing around or buildings. He took detailed pictures. He played around with light, shadow and composition. We see this is three of these shots. He was able to take pictures of different genres.

Paul Strand [Historical Photographer]
Paul Strand (1890-1976) had a significant influence on establishing photography as an art form in the 20th century. He photographed numerous things and places throughout America, Africa and Europe.
I think one reason he helped establish photography as art was that he did not only take pictures of people standing around or buildings. He took detailed pictures.
